Introduction

Welcome to RR's Unit Converter user manual version 3.1 - September, 2008
RR's Unit Converter is an useful tool for any kind of simple
or compound unit conversions, using double precision 64-bit format values and
operations, with build in dictionary for over 1000 units.
Scientist,
engineers, students or anyone involved in scientific, financial, archeological
or other activities where unit conversions are required will found this program
useful.
By using a careful developed algorithm, unit conversion factors
could be defined between any two units. This feature allows you to use the most
precise known unit conversion factor between two units. Therefore, any unit
conversions will be performed with high precision.
The compound unit feature
gives you more flexibility to perform complex transformation and
calculation.
You could define your own values for fractions. Input fraction:
both values, output fraction: bellow value only( above value is the
result).
RR's Unit Converter comes with a large
database of units and a dictionary with definitions for almost all units in the
database is included for your convenience.
You may even create categories and
add your own units to the database.
All those features make RR's
Unit Converter a powerful tool for all those involved in activities
that require any kind of unit conversion.
Thank You for using RR's Unit
Converter,
RR's Unit Converter,

Select Unit Category
- use this drop down box to
select main unit category.

Value - column
Where values are entered
and the result is displayed.

Select from this drop down box the main
unit. On compound units mode there are 3 drop down boxes to select from, for
Input and Output values.
-First: is used to select main compound unit. For
example on Speed category we defined generic -
length/time which comprise all units from length and time categories as
fraction.
-Second: use it to select above fraction main unit;
-Third:
select the below fraction main unit;
Definition
Definition for the selected unit or prefixes/derivations will
be displayed here.

Add/ Modify/ Delete
[TOP]

Notice: To add/modify or delete a unit, please first save the database under other name. Default database is read only.

On this panel you may Add/Modify , Delete or Select main
categories.
Add - Enter
here the name of new category;
Modify - select a category,
change it's name;
Then press Add/Modify button to add at the
bottom of the list or to modify the selected record.
Or, press
Insert button to insert new added category above the selected
one.
Delete - Select a category and press Delete
Category button.

On this panel you may Add, Modify, Delete or Select units and
their derivations.
Add - Type the name of a new unit, select
its conversion factor value and unit, type its definition then press
Add/Modify or Insert
button.
Modify - select a unit or prefix/derivates, edit its
name and press Add/Modify.
Delete - select a unit or
prefix/derivates and press Delete Unit to delete the
selected unit or Delete Prefix/Deriv. to delete the selected
prefix/derivates.
Set As Default check boxes are used to
define the default unit in that category or unit prefix/derivates. Each category
must have a default unit and each unit must have a default prefix/derivates.
Select the one that you think is the most important. For example on length
category the default unit is meter with no prefix( default prefix for meter is -
). Those settings will also sets the default compound units behavior. When
you define a compound unit like Speed which is length/time, the
default unit for length is set to time and the default unit for time
is set to second. In that case the default unit for
Speed is m/s. Knowing that, you may
define Match for example, as been (331.6 length/time)
(meaning 331.6 m/s).

On this panel you may define
the conversion factor and unit for the unit from Edit/Add
panel.

Here you may type or edit
the definition for the new added unit or for a unit that already exists in the
database.
Notice - Adding first unit - when you add the
first unit, you must define the conversion factor as been 1 to itself.

Notice: To add/modify or delete a unit, please first save the database under other name. Default database is read only.

On this panel you may Add/Modify , Delete or Select main

Or, press
Insert button to insert new added category above the selected
one.
Delete - Select a category and press Delete
Category button.

On this panel you may Add, Modify, Delete or Select units and
their derivations.
Add - Type the name of a new unit, check
or uncheck the box form Define Compound panel, select its
conversion factor value and unit, type its definition then press
Add/Modify or Insert
button.
Modify - select a unit or prefix/derivates, edit its
name and press Add/Modify.
Delete - select a unit or
prefix/derivates and press Delete Unit to delete the
selected unit or Delete Prefix/Deriv. to delete the selected
prefix/derivates.
Set As Default> check boxes are used to
define the default unit in that category or unit prefix/derivates. Each category

Speed is m/s. Knowing that, you may
define Match for example, as been (331.6 length/time)
(meaning 331.6 m/s).

On this panel you may define the compound unit parts. Check box to
enable selection. Select the units that form the compound unit. On the main
window you will be able to do conversions among any units from length and time
category as a lenght/time fraction.
Uncheck box if the unit is defined only
as the default units fraction. For example Match is 331.6 m/s.
Examine original database to see how those units are defined.
See example chapter for more on
how compound units may help you to define and perform complex conversions and
calculations.

Use this panel to define conversion factor and unit for the unit
from Edit/Add panel.
For compound units, use as conversion
factor 1 to itself since the conversion factors will be imported from each
simple unit that composes compound unit that you just defined.

Here you may type or edit the definition for the new added unit or for a unit that already exists in the database.
Notice - Adding first unit - when you add the first unit, you must define the conversion factor as been 1 to itself.

The following examples will demonstrate how to use compound
units.
First example: Fuel Consumption
Fuel consumption
conversion is a complex operation because in US is measured in miles/gallon and
in Europe in liters/100 Km. RR's Unit Converter allows you to do this kind of
calculation between compound units with ease by using this compound unit
feature. Having lenght and volume categories already defined, all you have to do
is to define another category: Fuel Consumption and under that
category, define two compound units: lenght/volume and volume/lenght. That's
all!. Now you could perform any compound conversion and calculation among all
the units defined in lenght and volume categories. In this case, select
lenght/volume and mile per gallon for input compound unit. For output compound
unit, select volume/lenght and liters per kilo-meter. Type 100 for bellow
fraction value at output compound unit and you will have liters per 100
kilometers as output compound unit. At input compound unit type the known value
for miles and leave 1 for bellow fraction value for gallon( you know how many
miles per gallon). Conversion will be done and the result will be displayed as
above fraction value at output unit.
Second example: Price conversion
Define a new simple unit
category Currency, add USD, Euro and any other currency
you want and define exchange rates. Now, if you want to transform prices like
USD per gallon to Euro per liter, define a new compound unit Volume
prices for example , and define one compound unit
Currency/Volume on Add/Modify/Delete
Unit - compound mode window with conversion factor 1 to itself. Now, you are
ready for price conversions. In main window, select category Volume
prices and on input unit select USD per gallon, enter the price and at
output unit select Euro per liter. The conversion will be done
immediately.
